Seven public schools, administered by the County Board of Education; 377-3701. Grades K-12 are served in Grady County. Five vocational-technical schools, eight colleges, and universities are within a 60-mile radius of Cairo.

EDUCATION

Grady County Schools

With a professional staff of 354 and an outstanding teacher-pupil ratio, the 4,581 students enrolled in the Grady County School System can expect a first-rate educational experience at any level.

There are five elementary schools, one middle school, and Cairo High School, home of the Syrupmakers. The Syrupmakers have long been considered a perennial power in the classroom and on the athletic field as well.

Grady County puts an emphasis on parental and community involvement. High-tech computers and automated media centers give the students hands-on experience.

As students evolve with personal skills, they may be directed to a college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on math and science skills, or toward the Tech-Prep program, preparing them for the business world. Career awareness and exploration ideas are effectively presented at the upper school level.

One of South Georgia’s finest private academies, Brookwood School is based in Thomasville. It provides a splendid college preparatory curriculum and can be reached at 226-8070.

COLLEGES

Bainbridge College

Bainbridge College’s link with Grady County is extremely close since it is a mere 20 miles from Cairo. Hundreds of leaders in Grady county received their two-year degrees at the progressive institution which is a fully accredited unit of the University System of Georgia.

Thomas University

Thomas University is a private, career-oriented, four year liberal arts college located in Thomasville, Georgia.

Southwest Georgia Technical College

Making a major contribution toward training the area labor force is Southwest Georgia Technical College in Thomasville. Providing a variety of diploma, certificate, and associate degrees, the college also works directly with Grady County in cooperation with the State of Georgia’s innovative “Quick Start” program. This program is geared to training new or expanding firms in Grady County. The Technical College also maintains extensive adult literacy and Continuing Education Services.

Florida State University

Florida State University is a public co-educational institution. The college has seventeen major academic divisions with courses of study in 26 major disciplines. In addition to the associate in arts certificate, the college offers 96 authorized baccalaureate degree programs covering 225 fields, 100 authorized master’s degree programs covering 191 fields, 72 authorized doctoral degree programs covering 135 fields and various specialist and professional degree programs.

Florida A&M University

Florida A& M University is a four-year, public, co-educational and fully accredited institution of higher learning located in Tallahassee offering over 60 undergraduate programs and over 30 graduate programs within its 12 schools and colleges.

Tallahassee Community College

Tallahassee Community College opened in 1966 to serve the post-high school educational needs of students from Leon, Wakulla and Gadsden counties in Florida although presently enrollment comes from a much wider area. TCC welcomes recent high school graduates and returning adult students who may wish to start or continue a college education as well as a wide variety of enrichment courses.

Valdosta State University

Small classes at all levels are taught by 500 well qualified faculty members at the state of the art campus in Valdosta, Georgia. The campus has a fully operational fiber-optic data network with 24 student computer labs. Distance learning classes enhance the ability of the University to offer classes as multiple sites via the statewide GSAMS network.

Healthcare

Citizens of Cairo and Grady County have access to an array of healthcare services, thanks to the 60-bed Grady General Hospital. (phone 377-1150) This excellent facility was a recipient of the 1999 “100 Top Hospitals: Regional benchmarks for success award” given by HCIA and the Health Network.

The current facility, which opened in 1960, continues to undergo renovations and upgrades to technology bringing state-of-the-art treatment and diagnostic capabilities. The hospital offers sophisticated CT scanning and echocardiography, as well as an outpatient rehabilitation department.

The expanded birthing center features four labor/ delivery / recovery / postpartum suites, providing for better continuity of care. The coronary care unit is equipped with the latest Space Lab patient monitoring system.

Grady General Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission of Healthcare Organizations. As an affiliate of John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Grady General is a part of the statewide telemedicine network based at the Medical College of Georgia, which further allows access to medical specialties in a very cost effective manner. Additionally, John D. Archbold Memorial has been named by US News and World Report as one of the Best Hospitals in the country for the third year in a row.

For patients needing additional medical follow-up or assistance with the activities of daily living, Archbold Home Health Services and South Georgia Nursing Services (800-371-1992) are available in Grady County. The Grady HomeCare Centers offers home medical equipment and supplies for sale or rental. Additionally, Hospice of Southwest Georgia provides a special kind of caring for terminally ill patients and their families.

The Grady General Support League is composed of concerned citizens along with area business and industry leaders who have dedicated themselves to providing support for capital equipment additions to the hospital.

Grady General Hospital offers a successful community education series, HealthTalk. The series brings area physicians and healthcare professionals to Cairo to speak on current topics of interest in healthcare for citizens of the community.

Voter Information

County registration automatically includes registration for State and National elections. Register at the county courthouse; 377-4132. To vote in city elections, register at City Hall; 377-1722.

Your Georgia Drivers license will expire on your birthday and may be renewed 90 days prior to your birthday. Out-of-state licenses should be replaced as soon as possible.

Grady County’s impressive $2.5 million courthouse, completed in 1985, houses the commission form of government. A mayor/council form of city government serves Cairo.
