Mule Day in Calvary, Georgia

November - First Saturday

Calvary, GA

As the air is turning cool in Southwest Georgia, a small town on the crossroads of GA 111 and 179 comes bustling to life. The doors of aged barns open to reveal “old timey” wagons, platforms, hitching gear and other necessary items to give the parade its originality.

The day begins with a sunrise breakfast, done on the Mule grounds, of homemade biscuits and sausage. The delicious smell permeates the air as cars, trucks, and campers scurry to find their flea market site. The dust settles as over 500 booths of crafts, goodies, and wares from near and far are set up.

As the formal 11 am opening, the parade winds through the small town’s bustling blocks.  Judges look for the prettiest, ugliest and most ornery mules.

After the parade, spectators wind their way back to the mule grounds to enjoy barbecue, fish fry, and other short order items while they spend time at the bustling flea market.  There’s cane juice to drink and syrup made on the spot by the mule-driven cane grinder. Corn meal is also ground on site.

The Mule Museum contains many historical documents, photographs, and farm items from the last 300 years. The many items in the museum speak of a time where “shade” tobacco was the major crop in the days before mechanization when much of the local farm work was done by hand.

The museum of Dr. Maxwell holds pictures and items of original Calvary days. It is one of the original buildings and was moved to the Mule Grounds as a permanent home.  Children and adults are amazed at the information in these two museums. Gospel groups, cloggers, and other entertainers perform on platforms and on the mule grounds.
